Roofing

Tiles, Ridges & Verges

Re-bedding or re-fixing ridges and hips, verges and individual tiles.

Ridges, hips and verges take the worst of the weather. When the mortar holding them cracks and washes out, the tiles loosen, rock in the wind and eventually come off, often onto a path or a car.

What this work covers

Ridge and hip tiles

Lifting loose ridge and hip tiles, then re-fixing them either in fresh mortar or with a mechanical dry-fix system, depending on the roof.

Verges

The edge of the roof at the gable end. Mortar verges can be repointed; a dry verge system replaces the mortar with fixed caps.

Individual tiles and slates

Replacing cracked, slipped or missing tiles and slates, matched as closely as we can to what is already on the roof.

How we do it

  1. Look at the whole run: if one ridge tile is loose, the ones either side are often going too.
  2. Make safe: anything about to fall is secured first.
  3. Re-fix: in mortar or dry-fix, whichever suits the roof, and we will tell you which and why.

Questions we get asked about tiles, ridges & verges

Why do ridge tiles come loose?

The mortar under them weathers, cracks and loses its grip, especially on exposed roofs. Once a ridge tile can move, wind does the rest.

What is dry verge or dry ridge?

Systems that fix the edge and ridge tiles mechanically with clips, screws and caps instead of relying on mortar alone. They need far less upkeep, though they look different from a traditional mortar finish.
